Super 8 is a science fiction film written and directed by J. J. Abrams (Star Trek, Cloverfield), which centres around a group of misfit kids who, while making their own amateur film, inadvertently witness a catastrophic train crash. What follows is an unabashed homage to late ‘70s / early ‘80s films, such as ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Goonies.

While the affected suburban town and it’s residents are being over run by the military who are trying to contain an unearthly secret, the kids must avoid capture, build their relationships, save friends and uncover the mystery behind the train crash.

Acting like you’re acting can be difficult at the best of times, even for seasoned and respected actors, but the opening act solidifies the strength of the young cast, who do admirably and carry the majority of the film on their own.

The film has more heart and emotion than most summer blockbusters, but doesn’t hold back in the thrills department, with dazzling visuals and action sequences the film zips along at a good pace. It is beautifully shot and although there is a definite ‘classic science fiction’ feel, Abrams has modernised the visuals and infuses his own aesthetic.

It has a solid combination of high production values, an interesting – but not groundbreaking – family-friendly science fiction storyline, good acting and a retro soundtrack, all of which add up to a better than usual Hollywood film.

Conclusion

Overall, Super 8 is a decent film, and although suffering a less than satisfactory ending, it is entertaining and deserves your attention throughout. A good homage to an era of cinema which the target audience no doubt cherishes.
